Q: "Are there certain food you could suggest to help with menopause symptoms?"
MaryA: Nutritionist Catherine Saxelby responds:
"Researchers were hopeful that soy foods could alleviate menopausal symptoms (because of the phytoestrogens or plant hormones they contain) but their benefits are mild if they occur at all. More certain is the fact that a healthy diet containing a wide variety of foods (including soy and legumes) is ideal at this stage of life.
At menopause, lower your saturated fat and increase your vegetable intake to maintain weight. Ensure you obtain three or four serves of low-fat dairy daily for strong bones and limit alcohol which can make hot flushes worse."
