June 5 is Arbor Day, the day when people worldwide are encouraged to plant and care for trees. So what better way to mark the occasion than by planting something in your garden? Now is a good time to plant deciduous fruit trees, and it's still a good time to plant vegetable crops.
If you're planting vegetables from seed, make sure the soil isn't waterlogged to allow seeds to sprout.
Make sure seeds (and seedlings) have extra warmth. A cloche can help on this front. It is a protective translucent cover for plants, which is easy to make. Simply take a size-appropriate plastic (soft) drink bottle and cut off the top. Place the open, cut edge over the seed or seedling. (A cloche is an effective pest deterrent, too.) Just remember to lift off the cover during the day once seeds sprout to get rid of any condensation build-up.
