Q: "Your recipes often call for salt-reduced beef/chicken stock cubes/powder. Where can you buy these? I've tried every supermarket in Taranaki to no avail."
Jane ChapmanA: Bought stock powders can be high in salt or sodium, which isn't good if you're watching your blood pressure. There are lower sodium options out there. I like Continental powdered salt-reduced stocks in chicken and beef. A good vegetable stock option is Massell salt-reduced vegetable stock cubes, found in the gluten-free area of the supermarket. The Maggi Garlic stock powder is also relatively low in sodium, it just doesn't say it specifically on the pack.
And it's worth remembering homemade stock is generally the lowest salt of all. Once you get going on making your own, it's not difficult at all – just make sure you don't add any salt.
