Five ways to add flavour to your food

It is a common misconception that healthy food is tasteless and boring. Well, if you’re living on lettuce and plain fish or grilled chicken and broccoli, then yes I would agree – that is plain dull! But that is NOT the way it needs to be, I promise.

Eating good, healthy food should be a celebration of flavour and I can certainly share with you that none of the food I eat is bland or tasteless and it is all extra super healthy and good for me – helping me to be my best and feel amazing every day.

Here are my five favourite things to add ZING and excitement to your food.

Health and wellness

I absolutely LOVE the beginning of a new year! Rested, rejuvenated and all fired up ready to create magic again with new-found energy and excitement.

I have read far too many new year's resolution articles to dare overwhelm you with yet another 'new year, new you' message – so instead I would like to share with you the five things I think will really help you wake up EVERY DAY this year feeling fabulous.

Build healthy habits

I have just sat down to my afternoon tea – delicious chopped veges (not your boring old celery and cucumber though… broccoli, asparagus, tomatoes and carrots, no less!!) with some cottage cheese.

As I was munching away, I thought to myself… wow, how did this become my normal? I don’t even think about it, this is what I do every day!

I have always eaten well, but as the years have gone by I have created healthy habits for myself which are now just my default; it’s super-easy and I feel so good and energetic now, I couldn’t imagine eating any other way.

It is ALL about seeds...

Let’s not overlook seeds when it comes to health and wellness!

We all know that nuts are healthy – packed with good fats, vitamins and minerals that are all-round fabulous for your body (provided you don’t have tooooo many – they are high in energy, let’s not forget!). Seeds, however, are equally fabulous and often don’t really get much of a mention. So, it is time for me to change that… seeds, it is your time to shine!

Does timing matter?

There are so many theories about how many times a day you should eat and I have heard them all. Six times a day, every two hours; every four hours; don’t eat after 7pm; don’t eat after 9pm…!

The truth is, it is important to eat regularly but there isn’t a generic one-size-fits-all rule that will work for everyone – we are all different. When it comes to the timing of your meals and how many times you need to eat in a day, this all depends on who you are, how many hours you are up for, what time you get up and go to bed, and when (and if!) you do exercise. Let me explain.

Are you a human rubbish bin?

When you head round to someone else’s for dinner, you can often end up overdoing things a bit on the eating front and may end up going home feeling uncomfortably over-full – and, as my friends often describe, feel like they have a food baby onboard!!

What can we learn from Japan?

Welcome to the first of our regular blogs from Claire Turnbull, HFG nutritionist and managing director of Mission Nutrition.

I recently had the great fortune of heading to Japan for a week for work with Dr Joanna McMillian (an amazing dietitian from Australia) and wow, what an experience!
