All food labels have to have certain information on them, but it can be hard to decipher. Here’s a handy guide on what information has to be on a label.
If you tried to read and decipher every label on the supermarket shelf, it would take three hours to do the weekly shop. Yet label-reading is an essential skill if we want to make healthy choices.
The Food Code, administered by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), specifies the things that must be included on food labels.
Most packaged foods must have these labels, but there are some exceptions. Examples of exempt foods include:
- Herbs and spices, which have little energy (kilojoules)
- Unpackaged foods like fruits and vegetables
- Foods packed where they’re made, like in a bakery
- Foods in very small packs
- Foods sold at fund-raising events
